The Wetterhoun is a Dutch water dog traditionally used on otter, also kept as a hunting dog and to guard the yard; the FCI places it in group 8, section 3 (water dogs), with working trial. The standard calls for a simple dog, square in overall picture and powerfully built without being heavy, whose coat is made of solid, firm curls that feel quite coarse and greasy, with short hair on head and legs. Ideal height at the withers is 59 cm for males and 55 cm for females, at approximately 34 kg and 28 kg respectively.

In and around the house, the Wetterhoun is watchful and keen to catch vermin. The Wetterhoun can initially be reserved with strangers, but should not be fearful."
