At a glance

The West Siberian Laika is a Russian all-round hunting spitz of medium to slightly larger size, substantial and cleanly built, with clearly pronounced sexual dimorphism. Its dense, harsh, straight outer coat over a soft woolly undercoat forms a collar on the neck and side-whiskers on the cheekbones, and there is a protective brush of hair between the toes. Males stand 55–62 cm and females 51–58 cm at the withers, and the FCI recognises the breed with working trial.

Health

This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.

Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.

The breed standards this profile is built from don't list breed-specific health screening. Ask a vet which checks suit the dog in front of you.

Behaviour

Steady and even-tempered, self-confident and alert with strangers

The FCI standard's Behaviour and Temperament section reads in full: "Steady, evenly-tempered. A vigorous dog with very well developed sense of scent and detecting game, with an alert, sensitive and pronounced passion for hunting, is equally keen to hunt feathered as furred game. Self-confident and alert towards strangers."
