The Transylvanian Hound (Erdélyi Kopó) is an ancient Hungarian scent hound shaped by the climate, terrain and hunting of the Carpathians, once the favourite hunting dog of the medieval aristocracy. Quiet, even, determined — and weatherproof
The FCI standard sums the breed up as good-natured, courageous and enduring: its basic character is quiet and even, but also determined and lively, and it stands even extreme weather. The AKC adds that it is calm, balanced yet firm and adaptable, playful enough to be a family favourite, friendly enough for an apartment or a house, and loyal and courageous enough to make a good guard.
A hunter who may not agree with you
The AKC says the Transylvanian Hound is primarily a hunting dog that can hardly resist its ancient instincts: plan on at least an hour-long walk or run a day, keep it on a leash and allow off-lead romps only in securely enclosed areas, because the urge to chase game may be stronger than the attachment to its owner. It is sensible enough to understand what its handler wants — it just may not agree — so training should be patient, consistent, clear and short, never harsh.
