At a glance
The Svensk Lapphund is a typical spitz of slightly less than medium size with a proud head carriage and a rectangular body, originally a reindeer-herding dog and nowadays mainly kept as an all-round companion. It carries a profuse weather-resistant double coat that stands straight out from the body, with a ruff round the neck and a bushy tail. Ideal height at the withers is 48 cm for males and 43 cm for females, with an allowance of ±3 cm.

The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section describes the Lapphund as lively, alert, kind and affectionate, very receptive, attentive and willing to work; its abilities as a good herding dog made it very useful in the reindeer trade. The standard adds that it is very versatile — suitable for obedience training, agility, herding and tracking — easy to train, and full of endurance and toughness.
