The Stephens' Stock Cur began as a strain of Mountain Cur — the little black dogs bred by Hugh Stephens's family in Kentucky — and became distinct enough to be recognised by UKC as a separate breed in 1998. It is a powerful, agile tree dog of small to medium size, 41–58 cm tall and never over 25 kg, with a short close-fitting outer coat over a soft dense undercoat, black with white markings on no more than a third of the body. The standard describes a fast, hard hunter that carries its head high on track, is intelligent and easily trained, and has strong treeing instincts on all game.

Deafness is a disqualification
The UKC breed standard lists deafness among the disqualifications for the Stephens' Stock Cur. If you are unsure whether a dog hears normally on both sides, ask your vet about a BAER hearing test. The standard does not discuss any other health condition and no parent-club health page was located.

The UKC standard says the Stephens' Stock Cur is a fast, hard hunter that carries its head high on track — open or semi-open trailing is preferred but silent trailing is acceptable — and that the breed is intelligent and easily trained with strong treeing instincts on all game.
