The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a modern British working terrier with a well-documented history: Major Sir Jocelyn Lucas, worried that show-bred Sealyhams were getting too big, crossed his hunting Sealyhams with Norfolk Terriers, and with the Hon. Mrs Enid Plummer developed a small, workmanlike terrier designed to work in a pack and push game out of thick cover. It is a low-stationed, sturdy, well-boned dog of about 25–33 cm and 5–8 kg with a wiry outer coat over a thick dense undercoat. The UKC standard describes it as determined, self-confident, lively, keen to hunt, fearless but not foolhardy, and friendly by nature without being dog-aggressive.
