At a glance
The Mastín Español is a dog of great size, well balanced, very powerful and muscular, with a massive head and a semi-long coat; its bark is raucous, low-pitched, deep and audible from a considerable distance. The breed's historic job was to travel with the migrating Merino flocks and defend them from wolves and other predators, and it still guards herds, farms, people and property. The standard sets no upper size limit: minimum height at the withers is 77 cm for males and 72 cm for bitches, and it states that these should be amply exceeded — over 80 cm in males and over 75 cm in females.

Behaviour
Rustic, affectionate and noble, but very determined
The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section describes a very intelligent dog whose expression manifests both intelligence and beauty: rustic, affectionate, kind and noble, and very determined when facing dangerous animals and strangers, especially when defending farms or cattle. It adds that in his behaviour one can see a dog sure of himself, measuring his strength because he is aware of his enormous power.
