The Segugio Italiano ("Segit") is Italy's ancient scent hound, thought to descend from Egyptian hounds and used for wild boar since pre-Roman times, in short-haired (pelo raso) and wire-haired (pelo forte) varieties. The FCI standard describes a hound endowed with great resistance and good speed, extremely eager whether working alone or in a pack, of steady temperament but not very outgoing, with a soft expression and a resonant, very pleasant voice. The AKC and the American parent club call it gentle, docile, eager to please and loyal — well-mannered enough to be a vigilant watchdog and adaptable to any home given enough exercise — and both say it has no known health issues at this time.

General health screening
The AKC says the Segugio Italiano has no known health defects at this time, and the American parent club's health page says the same; the AKC does advise cleaning and airing the long drop ears regularly to prevent infection. Ask your vet about routine screening appropriate to an active hound of this size.
Behaviour
Eager in the field, steady but not outgoing at home
The FCI standard describes a scent hound adapted to the most varied terrain, endowed with great resistance and good speed, extremely eager whether working alone or in a pack, of a steady temperament but not very outgoing, with a soft expression and a resonant, very pleasant voice. The AKC adds that its willing nature, intelligence and gentle, docile demeanour make it an ideal companion for people of all ages, that it is well-mannered and vigilant enough to be an excellent watchdog, neither aggressive nor shy but courageous with a cautious nature, and that it is not a bold breed.
A brisk walk, free roaming, and a lead outside the fence
The AKC suggests a brisk 30–45-minute walk plus one to two hours of free-roaming time a day, or regular dog-park trips for apartment dwellers; it needs a consistent and firm handler, is eager to please and learns quickly, but like many hounds is best kept on a lead outside a fenced area, and early socialisation helps prevent a shy or timid hound. Both coat types shed minimally and need brushing once or twice a week.
