The Rafeiro do Alentejo is Portugal's big, bear-headed estate and flock guardian from the Alentejo plains, descended from Middle-Eastern molossers that once followed the transhumant herds between mountain and plain. The FCI standard describes a powerful, rustic, sober and calm dog with a calm, confident expression, neither aggressive nor shy — an excellent farm watchdog that is most vigilant at night and very serious about any territory or property entrusted to it. Hip dysplasia
The Portuguese breed club (ACRA) runs a hip and elbow dysplasia screening protocol for its members; the AKC says the majority of Rafeiros are healthy dogs. Ask your breeder for the parents' hip results and your vet about keeping a giant puppy lean.
Elbow dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia is covered by the Portuguese breed club's screening protocol alongside hips. Ask your vet if you notice front-leg lameness, especially in a growing dog.
General health screening
Beyond hips and elbows, the AKC and FCI pages consulted do not single out breed-specific conditions and the AKC describes the breed as generally healthy with a 12–14-year lifespan; ask your vet about routine screening appropriate to a giant dog, including the drop ears.
Behaviour
Calm, confident, most vigilant at night
The FCI standard calls the Rafeiro do Alentejo an excellent farm and estate watchdog and a very useful livestock protector, more vigilant at night and very serious when guarding territory or any property entrusted to it, with a calm and confident expression, neither aggressive nor shy. The AKC describes a large, powerful, rustic, sober and calm dog that moves with a heavy, slow roll and that historically worked alone on the plains, defending the herd against any intruder.
Adaptable and devoted, but a guardian first
The AKC trait chart rates the breed 5/5 for adaptability, affection with family, trainability and watchdog/protective nature but only 2/5 for barking and 3/5 for openness to strangers and other dogs — a quiet, devoted dog that will nonetheless take guarding seriously. Its short-to-medium, thick coat needs only weekly grooming, and the AKC suggests fenced play, several walks a day or dog sports such as obedience and rally for exercise.
