The Polish Lowland Sheepdog — PON, from Polski Owczarek Nizinny — is a compact, muscular, shaggy-coated herder known in central Poland since the 16th century, rebuilt after near-extinction in the Second World War and thought to be an ancestor of the Bearded Collie. Confident, lively and clever with a good memory, it is an excellent housedog and alert watchdog that accepts other animals and plays tirelessly with children, but it can be dominant, stubborn, territorial and suspicious of strangers. It needs an hour or two of exercise a day and a fenced space, and the thick double coat needs thorough weekly brushing.

Behaviour
Excellent housedog — for owners who can handle a confident herder
The AKC calls PONs excellent housedogs: accepting of other animals, gentle and tireless playmates for kids, alert watchdogs and quick learners — but the breed can also be dominating, stubborn and suspicious of strangers, so early socialisation and puppy classes are highly recommended; they are affectionate, bouncy, trainable pets for owners who can handle a confident, territorial herding dog.
Lively but tempered, with a long memory
The CKC notes a lively but tempered disposition — vigilant, intelligent, perceptive and gifted with a good memory, sometimes aloof with strangers but adapting to life with other animals; active and agile, it thrives on regular exercise and loves a challenge. The AKC says a high-energy PON needs ample daily exercise — at least an hour or two in a large fenced yard — and loves long walks, hikes, herding, agility and dock diving with its owner.
