At a glance
The Gończy Polski or Polish Hunting Dog is a lithe, compactly built scenthound used on boar and deer, and occasionally on fox and hare in the mountains of southern Poland. Its bone is strong but not heavy, and the build implies great mobility and an obvious ability to resist difficult working conditions in mountainous country; the coat is harsh and close-lying over an abundant undercoat that thickens in winter. Males stand 55–59 cm and females 50–55 cm at the withers.

Behaviour
Stable and gentle, intelligent and easy to educate
The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section describes a stable and gentle dog that is truly courageous and can even demonstrate proof of bravery; intelligent and easy to educate; not aggressive but remaining wary towards strangers, and an excellent guardian in addition to its qualities as a hunting dog. It adds that during the hunt the dog gives voice with a characteristic melody in various intonations, higher pitched in females.
