At a glance
The Podenco Canario is an ancient primitive hound whose ancestors were probably brought to the Canary Islands by Phoenician, Greek, Carthaginian and Egyptian seafarers; the UKC standard dates the type back some seven thousand years. It hunts rabbits by sight, scent and sound, often working with ferrets, and the standard credits it with extraordinary survival skills. It is a medium-sized, slender, light dog of about 53–64 cm carrying no excess fat, with the ribs, spine and hip bones readily apparent and very lean, well-developed muscle under a smooth, short, dense coat. The standard calls it courageous, enthusiastic and energetic, not at all aggressive, and very attached to its master.
