The Peruvian Hairless Dog is an elegant, slim companion dog of primitive type from Peru, recognised by the FCI in 1985 and kept for the genetic peculiarity that hairless and coated puppies appear in the same litter; the coated variety was later recognised for show and breeding to widen the gene pool. The hairless variety has no coat apart from a few hairs on the head, the ends of the legs and the tail, while the coated variety has a smooth, short, tight coat. Three sizes exist in both sexes: small 25–40 cm (4–8 kg), medium 41–50 cm (8–12 kg) and large 51–65 cm (12–30 kg), so this entry carries the union of all three.
