At a glance

The Perro de Pastor Mallorquín (Ca de Bestiar, Majorca Shepherd Dog) is a large, all-black herding, guard and defence dog of the Balearic Islands, recognised by the FCI in group 1 with a short-haired variety (the common one) and a long-haired one. The FCI standard describes a dog of great nobility that has only one master and accepts the advances of strangers with difficulty — intelligent, docile, affectionate, very shy and reserved when young, sensitive to an unsuspected degree, faithful to its master unto death, courageous and quarrelsome. Males stand 66–73 cm, females 62–68 cm, at an average of about 40 kg.

Health

This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.

Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.

General health screening

The only kennel-club source found for this breed is the FCI standard, which does not discuss health; no national parent-club or kennel-club breed page could be located. Ask your vet about routine screening (hips, elbows, eyes) appropriate to a large working dog.

Behaviour

One master, wary of strangers, faithful unto death

The FCI standard (published in French, Spanish and German only) describes the Ca de Bestiar as a dog of great nobility that has only one master and accepts the advances of strangers with difficulty; intelligent, docile and affectionate, very shy and reserved when young, with a sensitivity that reaches unsuspected limits; faithful to its master unto death, its gaze revealing what it thinks; courageous and quarrelsome. Its use is given as herding, guarding and defence, and dogs that are aggressive or fearful are disqualified.
