The Olde English Bulldogge is a modern reconstruction of the athletic bull-baiting dog of the early 1800s, begun in 1971 with a linebreeding scheme devised by Dr Fechimer of Ohio State after generations of breeding for show appearance had, in the standard's own words, severely compromised the health and lifespan of the bulldog. It is a muscular medium-sized dog of about 41–51 cm and 23–36 kg, of great strength but fluid, agile movement, and the standard requires that it appear capable of working without any breathing restrictions in heat or cold. Its disposition is confident, friendly and alert.

Breathing and head exaggeration
The UKC standard requires that the Olde English Bulldogge appear capable of performing without any breathing restrictions in either heat or cold, that head properties remain free of exaggeration so as not to compromise breathing or obstruct normal vision, and that breeders and judges always go for healthy and functional moderation, never for exaggeration. If your dog snores heavily, tires quickly or struggles in the heat, ask your vet about an airway assessment.

Confident, friendly and alert
The UKC standard says the disposition of the Olde English Bulldogge is confident, friendly and alert, and that it should be an animated and expressive dog both in and out of the show ring; shyness in a mature dog is a fault and viciousness or extreme shyness is a disqualification. The standard describes the breed as first and foremost an excellent companion that also has the drive, temperament and agility to work in numerous venues and as a service dog.
