The Mountain Feist is one of the American feist breeds put together in the rural South from hound and terrier crosses for people who needed a low-maintenance dog to hunt small game and keep vermin down; UKC recognised it in 2015. It is an agile, active little tree dog of 30–46 cm and 5.4–13.6 kg with a blocky head, a short smooth coat about an inch long or less, and any colour. The standard says Mountain Feists hunt using sight, sound and scent, are extremely alert, and run virtually silent on track — they are still used mainly on squirrel, and also on raccoon and rabbit.
