The Mi-Ki was started in the 1980s in Wisconsin by Mikki Mackin, a Shih Tzu breeder who wanted a smaller long-haired dog with a calm, quiet nature and added Papillon, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier and Japanese Chin to her stock; because she kept no accurate records the exact mixture is unknown, and the International Mi-Ki Registry was founded later to carry the breed forward. It is a small, friendly, elegant toy dog of fine to medium bone, ideally 18–23 cm tall and never over 25 cm or 4.5 kg, in a long silky single coat with no undercoat. The UKC standard describes it as adaptable, intelligent and sweet-natured, with companionship as its primary purpose.

Merle colour is disqualified
The UKC standard accepts all colours and markings except merle, and disqualifies both albinism and merle colour — the merle pattern is associated with hearing and eye defects in dogs. The standard does not otherwise discuss health and no parent-club health page was located.
