The Lucas Terrier was developed in the twentieth century by the British sportsman and author Major Sir Jocelyn Lucas, who crossed his hunting Sealyhams with Norfolk Terriers to keep a classic small British sporting terrier when show Sealyhams were growing too big. It is a small dog of about 25–30 cm and 5–9 kg with a weatherproof coat, described by the AKC as smart, sturdy and game for anything, and equally at home in the countryside or by the fireside. Its listed temperament is alert and outgoing, with what the parent club calls a sense of humour.

Conditions the parent club tracks
The AKC breed page says the Lucas Terrier generally enjoys robust health, with a very modest incidence of Cushing's disease and mitral valve prolapse and documented lymphoma particularly in senior dogs. It lists primary lens luxation (PLL), degenerative myelopathy (DM) and chondrodystrophy with intervertebral disc disease risk (CDDY/IVDD) as disorders historically known in the breeds of origin, and says mandatory DNA screening has meant no documented cases in the past three generations. Ask your vet or breeder about these DNA tests.
