At a glance
The Jämthund or Swedish Elkhound is a large rectangular Nordic spitz used mainly for hunting elk, and also bear and boar, classified by the FCI in group 5, section 2 (Nordic hunting dogs). It is clean-cut, strong and substantial but agile, with a close-lying topcoat over a short soft undercoat, longer on neck, chest, tail and the back of the legs. Males stand 57–65 cm (ideal 61 cm) and females 52–60 cm (ideal 56 cm).
