At a glance
The rough-haired Segugio Italiano is an Italian hound for hare and wild boar, built to fit into a square, lean and well muscled without a trace of fat so that it can follow game from dawn to dusk. Its body hair is definitely rough and no more than 5 cm long, with a moderate beard under the lips and short eyebrow hair that must not fall over the eyes. Males stand 52–60 cm and weigh 20–28 kg; females stand 50–58 cm and weigh 18–26 kg.

The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section says the Segugio is perfectly adapted to the most difficult terrains and works with ardour and passion, alone or in a pack. Compared with the short-haired variety it is described as more reserved, less exuberant, wise, calm and poised for the job, with a friendly, soft and proud expression veiled by a melancholic reflection, and a resonant, very harmonious voice.
