The Irish Red and White Setter is an Irish pointing dog bred primarily for the field; the FCI standard states outright that it must be judged chiefly from the working standpoint. It is strong, well balanced and athletic rather than racy, with long silky feathering on the legs, ears, flanks and tail over a short flat coat elsewhere. Utilization is given as "most acceptable companion and friend in the homes and the fields", but the standard adds that the breed is bred primarily for the field, that the standard must be interpreted chiefly from that point of view, and that judges at bench shows must judge the exhibits chiefly from the working standpoint.
