At a glance
The Griffon Belge is one of three small Belgian companion breeds that share a single FCI standard (no. 80-81-82) and differ only in coat and colour: it is the rough-coated black or black-and-tan one, while the Griffon Bruxellois is rough-coated red and the Petit Brabançon is short-coated. The standard describes a small guardian and companion dog — practically square, well boned yet elegant, and attracting attention by its almost human expression. It is a well-balanced little dog, alert, proud, very attached to its owner and very watchful, neither timid nor aggressive, and weighs 3.5 to 6 kg.

Behaviour
Alert, proud, very attached to its owner
The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section reads in full: "Well-balanced little dog, alert, proud, very attached to its owner, very watchful. Neither timid nor aggressive." Utilization is given as small guardian and companion dog, and the General Appearance section adds that the breed attracts attention by its almost human expression.
