At a glance
The Great Gascony Blue (Grand Bleu de Gascogne) is a very old breed: a contemporary of the St Hubert hounds, it made up the fourteenth-century packs of Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix, who used it on wolf, bear and boar, and it stands at the origin of all the French scenthounds "du midi". Imposing and giving an impression of calm strength and great nobleness, it carries a short, quite thick, very dense coat entirely mottled black and white for a slate-blue effect, with the two tan brow markings that give the "quatreoeillé" look; males stand 65–72 cm and females 62–68 cm. The FCI standard describes a very fine nose, a sonorous howling voice with deep tones, a very intent way of hunting, an instinctive pack hound — calm in temperament and obeying orders easily.

The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section reads in full: "Very fine nose; endowed with a sonorous howling voice, with deep tones. Very intent in his way of hunting. Instinctively a pack hound. Temperament calm; obeys orders easily." A timid subject is listed as a fault.
