At a glance

The German Longhaired Pointer is, in the AKC's own description, continental Europe's version of a setter: a pointing dog with a full tail and a long coat with dense guard hairs and a moderate undercoat, marked much like a German Shorthaired Pointer. It stands about 56–71 cm and weighs roughly 25–36 kg. Bred for more than a century to search, point, track and retrieve, it works upland birds, waterfowl and furred game — the breed is noted for its love of swimming — and the parent club describes a dog with the unusual ability to switch from a calm household pet to a fiery, passionate hunter.

Health

This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.

Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.

No breed-specific screening named

The AKC breed page says German Longhaired Pointers are a robust breed with no known congenital problems to date, and names no breed-specific condition, advising instead that good breeders use genetic testing of their breeding stock. Ask your vet what routine screening suits a large, active gun dog.
