The Finnish Lapphund is the profusely coated reindeer herder of the Sami people, a substantial spitz from north of the Arctic Circle that is now one of Finland's most popular companion dogs. Remarkably friendly and empathetic — once satisfied you are not a reindeer rustler — it is intelligent, quick to learn and naturally submissive with people, though it can be independent, is a pack dog that hates being left alone, barks a lot and sheds heavily. Calm at home, it needs only moderate exercise, but it should never be shaved.

Behaviour
Friendly, empathetic — and a startle reflex
The AKC calls the Lappie remarkably empathetic and among the friendliest of dogs, a submissive companion that is a bit wary of strangers, craves companionship and will be miserable if neglected; a distinctive trait is a strong startle reflex from centuries of ducking reindeer antlers. Intelligent and quick to learn but sometimes independent or strong-willed, it is a pack dog that can develop unwanted behaviours if regularly left alone for long periods.
Calm at home, moderate exercise, barks
The AKC describes calm dogs with moderate exercise needs — a long brisk daily walk or a half-hour play session usually suffices, and many enjoy herding trials, agility, obedience and tracking; barking is rated 5/5 and shedding is heavy. The CKC calls it intelligent, willing and faithful with an innate tendency to herd, a working dog capable of herding reindeer all day.

“The parent club's "Living with a Lapphund" page describes a smart, quick-learning all-round dog often called a clown, naturally submissive with people (not to be confused with shyness) and gentle with children, but says it is not the dog for everyone. It advises teaching household rules early and consistently, weekly brushing behind the ears, armpits and groin with heavier grooming in the once- or twice-yearly shed, bathing only about monthly since the coat has no doggy odour, and never shaving the double coat, which insulates against both heat and cold. Hip and elbow dysplasia and several eye disorders occur but are relatively rare.”
