The Finnish Hound (Suomenajokoira) was developed after the founding of the Finnish Kennel Club in 1889 from Finnish country dogs and imported European hound breeds, with the first standard written in 1932; it hunts hare and fox by scent, working independently and pursuing the quarry with resonant barking. Tricoloured with a black mantle and rich tan, clearly longer in body than tall and strongly built without heaviness, it carries a short soft undercoat under a medium-length, close-lying, rather harsh outer coat; males stand 55–61 cm (ideal 57–59 cm) and females 52–58 cm (ideal 54–56 cm). The FCI standard describes it as calm, energetic and friendly, never aggressive.
