At a glance
The Fawn Brittany Griffon is one of the oldest French scenthound breeds — a gentleman named Huet des Ventes kept a pack of them as early as the fourteenth century — and was much used on wolves in Brittany until those disappeared; the Club du Fauve de Bretagne was founded in 1949 to save what had become a rare hound. Bony and muscular, very resistant to weather and fatigue, it wears a very rough, harsh, rather short coat in fawn shades from golden wheaten to red brick, and both sexes stand 48–56 cm with a 2 cm tolerance for exceptional specimens. The FCI standard describes impassioned hunters that are good natured with people, sociable, affectionate and equable — courageous, wily, tenacious and steady in the field, and obedient and readily recalled when well handled.

Behaviour
Impassioned in the field, good natured at home
The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section reads: "Fauves de Bretagne are impassioned hunters but are good natured with people, sociable, affectionate and equable. They adapt themselves easily to all terrains and to all quarry. When hunting they reveal themselves to be courageous, wily, tenacious and steady. They are enterprising and efficient but show themselves equally capable of harking in. When well conducted, they are obedient and return readily." A timid dog is listed as a fault.
