At a glance
The East-Siberian Laika is one of the principal hunting dogs of the taiga and the mountain areas of central and eastern Siberia, evolved from Tungus, Yakut, pre-Baikal and pre-Amur Laikas and given breed status in 1947. It is a medium-sized dog of strong, compact build with a rather big, very strong head, a harsh straight outer coat over a soft woolly undercoat and a collar of longer hair over the neck; males stand 57–64 cm and females 53–60 cm. The FCI standard describes a steady, balanced temperament — a vigorous dog with a very well developed sense of scent and a pronounced passion for hunting, especially for larger prey, very independent when hunting, and friendly, kind and trustful towards people.
