The Dutch Smoushond was the "gentleman's stable dog" sold in mid-nineteenth-century Amsterdam to follow horse and carriage and catch rats in the stables; the last litter was registered in 1949 and the breed was reconstructed from 1973 by Mrs H. M. Barkman van der Weel. Rough-coated, lively, strong and squarely built, it carries a coarse, wiry, unkempt coat 4–7 cm long with moustaches, beard and eyebrows; males stand about 37–42 cm and females 35–40 cm, weighing 7–11 kg. The FCI standard describes it as affectionate, gay, friendly and free-spirited by nature, with a lively disposition but not nervously over-active nor easily frightened.
