The Drever is Sweden's short-legged deer-tracking hound, developed from the Westphalian Dachsbracke imported in 1910; the larger Swedish variety was named Drever in 1947 and recognised as a Swedish breed in 1953. Rather long in body and fairly short on legs, robust and strong rather than elegant, it carries a harsh, straight, close-lying coat in any colour with white markings; males measure 32–38 cm (ideal 35 cm) and females 30–36 cm (ideal 33 cm). The FCI standard calls it a keen and even-tempered hound, never aggressive, nervous or shy — and notes that the breed is strictly kept as a hunting dog and is hardly ever heard of as "just" a companion.

Behaviour
Keen and even-tempered; never aggressive or nervous
The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section reads in full: "Keen and even-tempered hound. Never aggressive, nervous or shy." The historical summary adds that the Drever is considered the first choice for roe and deer hunting but is also a very reliable hound on hare and fox, and that "the breed is strictly kept as a hunting dog and is hardly ever heard of as 'just' a companion dog".
