The Catahoula Leopard Dog is Louisiana's state dog — a medium-large, short-coated herding and hunting dog of striking merle coats and glass eyes, descended from Native American dogs crossed with the hounds, mastiffs and greyhounds of Spanish and French settlers. Used as a stock dog, bay dog, tree dog and guardian, it is independent, territorial and protective, needs firm guidance and early socialisation, and will not tolerate mistreatment; once it knows its place in the family it is affectionate, loyal and gentle. It has very high energy, barks little, and is screened for hips, eyes and hearing.
