At a glance

The Épagneul Breton, or Brittany Spaniel, comes from central Brittany and is numerically first among French sporting breeds; probably one of the oldest spaniel-type dogs, it was improved by outcrosses in the early twentieth century and its first standard was adopted at Loudéac in 1908. It is the smallest of the pointing breeds — a compact, well-knit, "cobby" dog with a short or absent tail and a fine, flat or slightly wavy coat, males 48–51 cm and females 47–50 cm at the withers. The FCI standard describes a dog that adapts itself to any environment, sociable and mentally balanced, with an intelligent and attentive expression, precocious in revealing its hunting passion and remarkable for its ranging, pointing, retrieving and aptitude for training.
