The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is the only breed to have kept the old French name "briquet", meaning a medium-sized dog; it is a harmonious, rather stocky reduction of the Grand Griffon Vendéen, selected before the First World War by the Comte d'Elva and rebuilt at Fontenay-le-Comte in 1946 after the wars had decimated it. Its coat is long without exaggeration, sometimes bushy and harsh to the touch, over a well-furnished undercoat, and it stands 50–55 cm (males) or 48–53 cm (females). The FCI standard describes a fine-nosed, fast dog with a pleasant voice that does not refuse brambles, takes a lot of initiative, has stamina and is robust — a passionate hunter whose master must make it obey.

The FCI standard splits this section in two. Behaviour: "Fine nose; fast dog with pleasant voice, does not refuse bramble; very nimble on rough terrain, hunts rather with nose to the wind." Temperament: "It takes a lot of initiative, has stamina and is robust. It must be equally good at working a cold track, at starting game and at driving it.
