At a glance
The Brazilian Terrier descends from the small European terriers brought back to Brazil in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by young Brazilians returning from universities in France and England; crossed with local dogs on the farms, the type fixed within a few generations and later followed its owners into the big cities. It is a medium-sized, slender, square-bodied dog with a short, smooth, fine coat lying close to the skin, standing 35–40 cm (males) or 33–38 cm (females) and weighing about 10 kg, and the FCI classes it as a hunting dog for small game, a guard dog and a companion. The standard describes it as restless, alert, active and keen, friendly and gentle to friends but suspicious of strangers.
