At a glance
The Braque du Bourbonnais is an ancient French pointing dog, first described in 1598 as a pleasant companion to the hunter, and known by the 1800s as a tailless pointer with distinctive fawn and liver ticking; fads for a faded lilac colour and natural bob tails nearly cost the breed its existence in the early 1900s. It is a compact, muscular, short-haired braccoid dog of about 48–57 cm and 16–24 kg, strong and powerful without losing a certain elegance. The UKC standard sums it up as a kind and affectionate companion as well as a passionate and intelligent hunter suited to varied game and terrain.

Health
This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.
Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.
No breed-specific screening named
The AKC breed page says most Bourbonnais Pointing Dogs are healthy dogs and names no breed-specific condition, advising instead that good breeders use health screening and genetic testing of their breeding stock; the UKC standard does not discuss health. Ask your vet what routine screening suits an active medium-sized gun dog.
Behaviour
Affectionate at home, passionate in the field
The UKC standard describes the Braque du Bourbonnais as a kind and affectionate companion as well as a passionate and intelligent hunter, suitable to a variety of game and terrain; the AKC page adds that its calm, gentle demeanour suits the foot hunter and that its relatively small size and short coat make it an easy house companion for a family that hunts.
