The Bolognese is a member of the Bichon family whose distant ancestors are the canes melitenses of antiquity, and which was traded between European courts as a royal gift from the fifteenth century onwards — Cosimo de' Medici gave eight of them to Belgian noblemen, and the breed appears in paintings by Titian, Brueghel the Elder and Goya. Small, stocky and compact, it wears a pure white coat that is long and fluffy all over and stands off in flocks rather than falling flat; males measure 27–30 cm and females 25–28 cm at the withers, weighing 2.5–4 kg. The FCI standard describes it as very serene and generally not very active, and very faithful to its master and household.
