At a glance

The Black Norwegian Elkhound (Norsk Elghund Sort) is Norway's smaller, all-black elk-hunting spitz — squarely built, with erect pointed ears, a proud rise of neck and a tail curled over the back. Males stand 46–49 cm (ideal 47 cm) and females 43–46 cm (ideal 44 cm), in a dense, rough, close-lying double coat of shining black, with at most a little white tolerated on chest and feet. The FCI standard sums up its temperament in three words: fearless, energetic and brave.

Health

This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.

Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.

The breed standards this profile is built from don't list breed-specific health screening. Ask a vet which checks suit the dog in front of you.

Behaviour

Fearless, energetic and brave

The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section reads in full: "Fearless, energetic and brave." Its stated utilization is as a hound for elk hunting, with a working trial required in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland).
