The Bergamasco Sheepdog is an ancient Alpine herder from around Bergamo whose three-textured coat felts naturally into loose flocks that protected it from cold and predators. Beneath the coat is a large, muscular, robustly healthy dog that is intelligent, patient and sociable, deeply attached to its family, serenely watchful and wary of strangers until introduced, aggressive only as a last resort. It thinks of itself as an equal partner rather than a subordinate and will comply — in its own way — once it understands what is wanted and why; moderate daily exercise shared with its people suits it, and the adult coat is almost maintenance-free.

Hip dysplasia
The parent club's health statement says no disease is known to affect the breed as a whole, but it recommends hip evaluation (PennHIP preferred) of breeding stock at two years, when skeletal growth is complete. Ask your vet about hip screening and about keeping your dog lean and fit.
Degenerative myelopathy
Degenerative myelopathy is not currently an issue in the breed, but the parent club proactively recommends the DNA test for offspring when either parent is a carrier and for all imported dogs. Ask your breeder about the parents' DM status.
Behaviour
An equal partner, not a subordinate
The AKC calls the Bergamasco sociable and highly intelligent with a deep desire to please, but a breed that thinks independently and often sees itself as an equal partner rather than a subordinate: one that can be made to understand what is wanted and why will happily comply, if in its own way. It watches over loved ones with serene vigilance, is wary of strangers until properly introduced and is aggressive only as a last resort.
Watchful herder — socialise early, exercise together
The CKC describes an intelligent, loyal dog that keeps its herding temperament — always watchful and alert, capable of prey drive, aloof with strangers and needing a lot of positive socialisation as a puppy; some are very vocal and some can be dog-aggressive, but it is good with the children of its household and usually with other pets. The AKC says it needs only moderate daily exercise, but as a mutual activity with its owner rather than being left alone in the yard.

Energy level is rated 3/5 (moderate) on the AKC breed-trait chart. The Royal Kennel Club puts its exercise need at "up to 1 hour per day".
