At a glance
The Austrian Black and Tan Hound (Brandlbracke, also called Vieräugl or 'four-eyes') is counted as a true descendant of the Celtic hound and is used both in the high mountains and on flat country, hunting by giving tongue and tracking wounded game. Medium in size, strong, long-cast and supple, it stands 48–56 cm and carries a smooth, close-fitting black coat about 2 cm long with clearly defined fawn markings — including the two above the eyes that give it its nickname. The FCI standard credits it with a sensitive nose, firm and willing tracking, and an agreeable temperament.
