At a glance

The Artois Hound (Chien d'Artois) is a French briquet-type scenthound, prized for hare hunting since the days of Henri IV and rebuilt from near-extinction in the 1970s by M. Audrechy and Mme Pilat. Well constructed and muscled, it carries a short, thick, dark-fawn tricolour coat, stands 53–58 cm and weighs on average 28–30 kg. The FCI standard describes a vigorous, hardy dog with a very fine nose that assembles well in the pack, balanced and affectionate.

Health

This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.

Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.

The breed standards this profile is built from don't list breed-specific health screening. Ask a vet which checks suit the dog in front of you.

Behaviour

Fine-nosed, packs well, balanced and affectionate

The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section reads: "Vigorous and hardy dog, with a very fine nose, assembling well in the pack, balanced and affectionate." The utilization section adds that six to eight matching Artois Hounds make up a small pack, and that the breed hunts hare in open country, deer in woodland and boar in thicket. A timid subject is a fault.
