The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a rugged, imposing livestock guardian from the Turkish plateau — bred for millennia to work alone, make its own decisions and see off wolves. Calm, intelligent and profoundly loyal, Anatolians are reserved with strangers, territorial and protective of whatever they consider their flock; they need tall, strong fencing, a lead outside the home, early socialisation and an experienced owner. Hip dysplasia

Behaviour
Independent guardian, reserved with strangers
The CKC calls the Anatolian a fiercely loyal guard dog with a possessive attitude toward family, property and livestock — calm, intelligent, confident and alert, slightly suspicious of strangers and reserved in public — and says owners stress socialisation from puppyhood and supervision around children because of its rough-and-tumble play; the AKC says it was bred to work independently and make its own decisions, so teaching it to respond to commands is a challenge, obedience training is a must, and under no circumstances should it receive protection or guard-dog training.
Energy-efficient, but never off lead
The CKC calls the breed energy-efficient — it may lie motionless for hours watching the flock, then accelerate to an astounding burst of speed; the AKC says it needs only moderate exercise, a yard with a tall, strong fence and a locked gate plus a long walk once or twice a day, and must be kept on lead whenever it leaves the home, quoting a breeder: never assume your dogs will be reliable off leash.
