The American Leopard Hound is one of the oldest treeing hound breeds in the Americas, probably descended from dogs the Spanish conquistadors brought to Mexico, and it comes in solid, leopard (merle) and brindle patterns. A tough, versatile tree dog used on raccoon, squirrel, bear and big cats, it copes exceptionally well with both hot and cold weather; the AKC rates it very vocal, very good with children and other dogs, and wary of strangers. Because merle-to-merle matings produce 'double merle' puppies at high risk of blindness and deafness, ask breeders how they pair colours.

Congenital deafness
Congenital deafness is reported in the breed; puppies can be BAER hearing-tested. Ask your breeder about hearing tests.
Double-merle blindness and deafness
The AKC warns that mating two merle-coloured American Leopards can produce "double merle" puppies with a much higher risk of being blind, deaf, or sight- or hearing-impaired. Ask your breeder about the parents' colours and about BAER hearing and eye tests.

A versatile, weatherproof tree dog
The AKC describes a medium-to-large hound that is very versatile in hunting raccoon, bear, bobcat, cougar, squirrel and any other tree-minded game, and that as an especially tough breed fares exceptionally well in extreme weather, both hot and cold.
Loud, sociable with its pack, wary of outsiders
On the AKC trait chart the American Leopard Hound scores 5/5 for barking, compatibility with young children and other dogs, mental-stimulation needs and watchdog/protective nature, but only 1/5 for openness to strangers and 3/5 for trainability — a hound that needs a job, early socialisation and tolerant neighbours.
