At a glance
The American Bully grew out of the American Pit Bull Terrier, with some influence from the American Bulldog, English Bulldog and Olde English Bulldogge, and was recognised as a breed in its own right. It is a smooth-coated, compact, thick-set dog of great strength for its size, bred in Pocket, Standard/Classic and XL sizes spanning roughly 33–58 cm at the withers. The UKC standard is emphatic that it is first and foremost a companion — confident and exuberant, gentle and friendly in demeanour despite its powerful look — and warns judges against rewarding exaggerated, overly massive dogs.

Exaggeration is a welfare concern in the breed
The UKC standard states that quality is never to be sacrificed in favour of size and mass, that UKC is unwilling to condone using exaggerated specimens in a breeding program, and cautions judges against awarding wins to them in order to preserve the breed's health and vibrancy. Dogs whose height is far from what is desired, overly massive dogs and dwarfism are disqualified. Ask your vet about weight, joint and breathing checks if your dog is a heavy or short-muzzled type.
Behaviour
A companion first, gentle despite the look
The UKC standard says the American Bully is first and foremost a companion, exhibiting confidence with a zest and exuberance for life; despite its powerful appearance its demeanour is gentle and friendly, and it makes an excellent family dog. Aggressive behaviour towards humans is described as uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable, and viciousness or extreme shyness is a disqualification.
