At a glance

The Alpine Dachsbracke (Alpenländische Dachsbracke) is an Austrian scenthound bred for the mountain huntsman: a short-legged, sturdy, strong-boned dog used to track wounded deer and to hunt hare and fox. The FCI standard describes a robust, weather-resistant working dog with a dense double coat, standing 34–42 cm at the withers, ideally dark deer red or black with clearly defined red-brown markings. Its expression is given as intelligent and friendly, its personality as fearless.

Health

This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.

Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.

The breed standards this profile is built from don't list breed-specific health screening. Ask a vet which checks suit the dog in front of you.

Behaviour

Intelligent, friendly, fearless

The FCI standard's Behaviour / Temperament section reads in full: "Expression intelligent and friendly. Fearless personality." Weakness in temperament, and any dog that is aggressive or overly shy, are disqualifying faults, as is any deviation that would hinder the dog's ability to hunt.
