At a glance
The Aidi (Atlas Mountain Dog) has lived for centuries in the mountains and plateaus of North Africa, and is still kept in numbers in the Moroccan mountains, where semi-nomadic people use it as a guard dog rather than as a flock herder. The UKC standard describes a solid, powerful but sinewy dog with a thick, bushy coat that shields it from sun and cold and acts as armour in fights with predators, standing about 52–62 cm at the withers in both sexes. It is always alert and very instinctive in judging danger, with inherent guarding behaviour, yet very docile and affectionate with its own family.

Health
This page is general information compiled from published sources. It is not veterinary, legal or purchase advice. Dogs vary within a breed — talk to a vet or a reputable breeder about the dog in front of you.
Health notes are not veterinary advice. Conditions listed are those reported for the breed, not a diagnosis of any dog. Always consult a veterinarian.
No published breed-specific screening
The UKC breed standard is the only kennel-club document found for the Aidi and it does not discuss health; no parent-club health page or veterinary study specific to the breed was located. Ask your vet what routine screening suits a large mountain guardian breed.
Behaviour
Instinctive guardian, docile at home
The UKC standard says the Atlas Mountain Dog is always alert and very instinctive in assessing the threat of danger, with inherent guarding and protective behaviour, while being very docile and affectionate with its family. The breed has never been used in the traditional flock-herding sense.
